Description
The restoration of the Swan House Boxwood Gardens required meticulous attention to detail and archeological-level site research to uncover Philip Shutze’s original design. Inspired by his time in Rome, Shutze referred to the garden as “a green garden in the Italian style,” blending romantic aesthetics with precise architectural elements. Over time, drainage issues and inconsistent maintenance practices compromised the garden’s structure, plantings, and materials, making its rehabilitation both necessary and complex. Through careful site measuring and surveying, the restoration team identified changes made during earlier construction efforts. These findings informed the project’s approach, ensuring the garden was returned to its original elevations and material specifications. Drainage problems were expertly addressed to protect the garden from further deterioration, preserving its structural integrity for years to come. The paths, rendered in crushed limestone and bordered by terracotta tiles, were restored to their original elegance, reflecting Shutze’s vision. English boxwood, central to the garden’s design, was replaced where needed, balancing lush plantings with the garden’s historic symmetry. From the remarkable screen porch overlooking serene fountains to the interplay of greenery and architectural details, the restored garden now captures the essence of Shutze’s inspiration while addressing the realities of sustainable maintenance.
